What is a septic tank?
A septic tank is an underground tank for wastewater and sewage from a home. The bacteria in the sewage decompose the organic waste, and the sludge settles to the bottom of the tank. The effluent flows out of the tank into the ground through drains.
What is a cesspool?
A cesspool is a sealed sewerage system consisting of a tank underground into which sewage and wastewater flow; this will need to be emptied more frequently than a septic tank.
What is a treatment plant?
A sewage treatment system is ideal for single / multiple houses and employs the well proven aerobic biological trickling filter process for the treatment of sewage.

How do I avoid problems?
For septic tanks: avoid excessive usage of household detergents or bleaches; these upset the biological balance of the system. Have the system emptied on a regular basis to ensure it remains in good working order. Do not overload the system by connecting rain or water drains to septic tanks or cesspools.

For cesspools: check the level in the tank regularly, do not let it overfill. Have it emptied at regular intervals: these will become more frequent if you install a dishwasher for instance.
